Why Read Luke?

Luke’s Gospel is about God’s plan. This Gospel explains who Jesus was, what he did, why he came, and how he prepared his disciples for the role they would have in that plan. Questions are set up by the Gospel’s story. The Gospel of Luke probes such issues as:

  • How did and originally Jewish movement become the basis for an offer of salvation for all?
  • If Jesus is the expected Messiah of Israel, how was it that he met so much opposition that they crucified him?
  • Even more, how could a crucified Messiah become the basis of hope for all of humanity?
  • How could an absent, slain figure be the center of God’s hope?
  • Why should anyone respond to Jesus as the center of God’s plan and what is it he calls us to do?

Virtually every unit in Luke’s Gospel challenges us to respond to Jesus by revealing who he is through his ministry. In this way, Luke proclaims:

Why Jesus came.

What Jesus did.

What Jesus wants his people to do.
